GDC Presents “Legend of The White Snake” at Capital One Hall

  • What:

    This production features three original pieces, each with distinct meanings, cultural
    influences, and styles.
    The title work, Legend of The White Snake, is a brand-new original piece with live
    music accompaniment by Chinese dulcimer musician Chao Tian. This work reimagines
    the classic Chinese folktale, which dates back to the Tang Dynasty. Although set
    during the reign of the Qianlong Emperor in the Qing Dynasty, the story has been
    retold in various forms over the centuries, including novels, operas, shadow plays,
    and movies. Our production puts a modern twist on this timeless love story, which
    follows an ordinary boy who falls in love with a beautiful woman who becomes his
    devoted wife. There’s only one catch: the beautiful and devoted wife is not human.
    She is, in fact, a thousand-year-old snake that has acquired the ability to transform
    into a human through centuries of Taoist training. With rich Chinese cultural
    influences and a touch of modern dance, our choreographer, Shu-Chen, brings this
    romantic story to life.
    The second piece, Insight, is an original work inspired by the quote, “When an old
    person dies, a library burns down.” This powerful statement reminds us of the
    immense wealth of knowledge and experience that older generations possess.
    Through her choreography, Shu-Chen expresses the awakening message that we
    should respect and care more for our seniors, appreciating all they have done to
    shape the world that younger generations will inherit. We need to hear their stories
    and learn their lessons so that we can benefit and grow from the wisdom they have
    to share.

Tephra ICA Arts Festival

    Now in its 33rd year, the Tephra ICA Arts Festival (formerly titled the Northern Virginia Fine Arts Festival) will take place on May 20–21, 2023 at Reston Town Center. Over 200 contemporary artists and artisans will travel from across the country to present original handmade artwork to share with Festival audiences.
    This year, the headlining performance at the Festival will be presented by Danielle Hatch, Arkansas-based interdisciplinary artist whose work explores the female body’s relationship to the built environment, notions of artificiality and power structures, through site specific installations, sculptures and performances. Titled “All Is In Motion, Is Growing, Is You,”is a site-specific performance. Gin Dance Company will be participating in this presentation and adorned in intricate sculptural costumes created by the artist. Check out Danielle’s work at Danielle Hatch
    All Is in Motion, Is Growing, Is You is a site-specific textile installation and accompanying performance taking inspiration from the founding of the community of Reston, in particular the negotiation between the roles of the individual and the collective in the process of community building. The Reston Town Center site and architecture is explored for possibility, transformation, and connection. With colors and shapes informed by native flowering plants of Northern Virginia, the installation and performances navigate and illustrate the tension between beauty and constraint within communal relationships.

GDC Presents “Insight” at Capital One Hall

    November 11, 2023 — 7:30 p.m.
  • What:

    This production is comprised of three pieces each with very different meanings, cultural influences, and styles. The first piece, “Insight”, a brand new original work that was inspired by the quote “When an old person dies, a library burns down.” This powerful quote reminds us of the immense wealth of knowledge and experience that older generations possess. Shu-Chen, through her choreography and dance, expresses the awakening message that we should respect more and care more for our seniors and appreciate all they have done to give younger generations the world they will inherent from them. We need to hear their stories and learn their lessons so we can benefit and grow from the wisdom they have to share. Second, a collaboration with kinetic sculpture artist, Kevin Reese. This work is called “I Am Here” in which GDC’s Artistic Director Shu-Chen Cuff, as a 1st generation immigrant to the U.S., delves into her experience of the desire, dreams, struggles, opportunities, and celebration of immigrating to this country. Using the kinetic sculpture design and dance, the audience will get to see and understand how the immigrants life experience come together with the community. Third, “A Cup of Tea”, an Asian culturally influenced work with live music accompaniment by Chinese Dulcimer musician, Chao Tian. In this work, Shu-Chen, through dance, delves into the culture and philosophy of the Chinese tea ceremony and reveals that the tea ceremonies and rituals contain an adoration of the beautiful among the sordid facts of everyday life, as well as a sense of refinement, an inner spiritual content, humility, restraint and simplicity. By sharing this work with the community, we hope to give the audience an experience that will inspire them to look first inwardly as they explore the introspective nature of the production, then outwardly to appreciate and connect with the people and possibilities that surround us all.

George Mason University

    NAMI is the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization. NAMIWalks will bring the community together for an exciting and engaging new event that will shine a light on their collective mental health needs, bring awareness to and advocate for open discussions, and raise funds for NAMI NoVA’s free-of-charge programming for families and individuals. We are excited to be performing and supporting this great cause!

    NAMI provides free advocacy, education, support, and public awareness so that all individuals and families affected by mental illness can build better lives. NAMI Northern Virginia is a NAMI affiliate serving the over 2.4 million people of Arlington County, Fairfax County, Loudoun County, and the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, and Falls Church. NAMI’s programs can help to better understand their own or a loved one’s mental health condition. People learn from connecting with others who have similar experiences. Tephra ICA Arts Festival

    This year, the headlining performance at the Festival will be presented by Baltimore-based multidisciplinary artist Hoesy Corona. Titled in tandem with Tephra ICA’s current exhibition, Hacia la Vida (Learn more about this magnificent work: https://www.tephraica.org/exhibitions/hacia-la-vida) is a site-specific performance that explores migration and displacement caused by climate change. Gin Dance Company will be participating in this presentation and will travel through the Festival streets adorned in intricate sculptural costumes created by the artist that simultaneously make their bodies anonymous and hyper visible. Using the archetype of the traveler and the anthropomorphic representation of mother nature, this performance humanizes the figure of the immigrant and celebrates the power and beauty of nature. This performance is presented by Reston Community Center.
